Dr. DaVina J. Hoyt is an academic, inclusive community building educator, student mentorship specialist, global networker, and athletic representative whose career spans higher education equity, international athletic advocacy, and global community building. Known as a champion for all people, she has spent over 20 years connecting individuals from around the world to build an inclusive global community rooted in trust, honor, and respect.

Educational Background & Research

Dr. Hoyt’s academic trajectory focuses significantly on minority retention, mentoring models, and dismantling educational barriers:

  • B.A.: University of California, Berkeley
  • M.A.: California State University, Bakersfield (Master of Public Administration, 2006)
  • Ph.D.: Washington State University (WSU), completed in 2013 with a focus on Cultural Studies and College Education.

Her research utilized The Ellison Model, a conceptual framework established by Dr. Deryl G. Hunt designed for intentional, inclusive community building and mentoring low-income or minority students.

Higher Education & Student Advocacy

The term “Spirits Influence” or “Influential Spirits” in her professional profile refers directly to the institutional frameworks she teaches—specifically how a shared, inclusive institutional spirit can positively impact minority student performance and retention.

Historic Student Leadership: In the mid-2000s, she made history at WSU by becoming the first African American female President of the Graduate and Professional Student Association

(GPSA), a leadership role to which she was elected for two consecutive terms. In 2006, she was featured in The Spokesman-Review advocating for students on the topic of student loans.

Institutional Equity: She held a faculty/post-doctoral position in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at WSU. She worked extensively with WSU’s diversity recruiting, administration, and diversity education programs through 2015. Her lasting impact on graduate diversity recruiting was displayed in a 2022 WSU business publication.

Mentorship Initiatives: She spearheaded WSU’s GEMS (Graduate Educators Mentoring Students) program and served as a mentor for student organizations like Unity House at Gonzaga University, helping integrate international and underrepresented students into the collegiate community.

Sports Administration & High-Profile Executive Assistance

Before expanding her work globally, Dr. Hoyt built a foundation in athletic environments, high-profile family assistance, and sports administration in Southern California:

San Diego Padres Organization: She worked for the San Diego Padres major league baseball organization under the ownership of John Moores and Larry Lucchino, collaborating closely with Jennifer Moores.

The Gwynn Family: She provided foundational personal and administrative support to the family of Baseball Hall of Famer and Padres legend Tony Gwynn, serving as the nanny for the family as well as the personal assistant to his wife, Alicia Gwynn.

International Sports Representation & Global Relations

Outside of traditional academia, Dr. Hoyt applies her expertise in mentorship, contract navigation, and advocacy strategy to global cultural, diplomatic, and athletic representation.

Global Networking & Royal Delegations: As a professional networker with over two decades of international engagement, Dr. Hoyt’s connections expand across the globe. Her international advocacy includes traveling to Nigeria as an official representative, where her global network has led her to meet with Royalty and Kings who have personally invited her into their Kingdoms.

Athletic Representation (Italy): She serves as the representative for her son, Caleb Isaiah Berry, an American football running back who played collegiately at Clarke University and California Lutheran University. When he transitioned to professional European sports via the Italian Football League (IFL), Dr. Hoyt took an active public role at the IFL Combine. She spoke on panels regarding global athletic development, family journeys in international sports, and the administrative guidance required to elevate athletes to the global stage.
